ANGEL 8 - SANDALPHON
The eighth angel to face humanity, and the first to be located in its infancy, also known as
the patron angel of prayer and embryo's. The name Sandalphon means "brother" (in greek) and in
the scripture, is the angel to carry the prayers of the faithful into heaven. Sandalphon is the
twin brother of the angel Metatron, and in legend is tied to the old testament prophet Elijah.
He is also mentioned in the other texts as being many other things, the heat from his flames so
intense, that other angels were afraid to go near him, but also gentle enough to also be the angel
of heavenly song. Needless to say it is fairly unsure exactly what this angel truly does. Sandalphon
first appears in episode 10 Magmadiver.

Strangely enough, this angel was detected deep inside a volcano, initially thought to be
an irregularity in pressure (appropriate that an angel known for his intense heat was found
deep in the lava, the relevance of this angel being of prayer seems to have no obvious link).
This irregualrity grew so large, that they were forced to communicate this to NERV, who immediatly set up
a base camp at the volcano's research facility. The research probe was used to investigate, it
decended into the depths of the volcano, past its maximum depth, and upon only just reaching the target
depth and getting a reading, the probe snapped at it was lost. None the less, it had been confirmed, an
embryo had been found (once again relevant), it was an angel. A special A-17 was called to capture the
embryo, in which evangelion unit 02, pilot Asuka, was given type D-type equipment, to decend the volcano
capture the target in an electro-magentic cage. Evangelion unit 01 waited outside the volcano as backup,
and a bombers flew over head, armed with N2 depth charges to destroy the angel (and NERV in the process)
if anything went wrong.
It all went according to plan, and Asuka managed to successfully cage the angel, however it was then that
it began to develop at a dangerously fast rate, breaking the cage. The mission then changed to one to
destryo the target. The angels physiology had been altered by the volcano, hardening and expanding it due
to the heat and pressure (a progression knife would be useless). Although similar to Gaghiel, he was also
capable of opening its mouth in molten lava, none the less a hand to hand angel. The low visibility, left
it at large advantage, however it was destroyed when Asuka used a progression knife, her coolant, and a law
of physics (thermal expansion) to destroy he target. The angel managed to sever evagelion unit 02 winch cable,
although Asuka was saved, by Shinji in evangelion unit 01 (without any protective equipment).
