ANGEL 9 - MATARIEL
The ninth angel to face humanity, and the fifth angel to attack Tokyo 3, also known as the
patron god of rain. The angel Matariel means "The present from god" and is one of the angels
related to rain. Despite seeming an angel of apparently little significance, it is mentioned
in the scripture (the third book of Enoch) as being one of the rulers of this world, a title
commonly attributed to Satan (the devil), or more plainly an angel and a deamon. Whether it is
truly an angel, a deamon or something else is unclear, none the less the angel still presents
a challenge to NERV. Matariel first appears in episode 11 In the still darkness.

The very nature of this angel is yet again, totally unique, unlike all angels that had come
before it. Just where it came from is unknown, although this seems to a be an angel not born
from the water as it doesnt seem to be able to swim. Before it was even noticed, all of Tokyo 3
had suffered a total power shut down, all magi systems offline, all backup power systems disabled.
Whether this was due to the angel or to sabotage is not known, althought it does make more sense that
it was the angel, due to the close proximity of shut down, and the angels arrival in Tokyo 3. Obviously
not very agile, or designed for hand to hand combat, nor any other type of combat, it relies on its
ability and a stealthy approach. It has no weapons, other than teh extremely corrosive acid that it
secreets from a mambrane on its underside that rains down on its target (appropriate weapon for a
rain angel). Upon reaching Tokyo 3, almost completly undetected, it began to work corroding the armor
plates one level at a time.
Almost the whole city was unaware of teh attack, that is of course if they hadnt seen the target, which
is how NERV command prepared all three evangelion for launch manually (a difficult laborious process).
The three pilots were forced to make thier own way down to the launch chamber through the long tunnels
down from the surface. All the time this was happening, armor plate after armor plate began to fall to
the acid from the angel. This was the first angel to be met by all three evangelion, who quickly devised
a plan to defeat it. Facing up teh shaft it had chosen to melt, the evangelion took their positions,
Asuka to take the brunt of the acid, Rei to retrieve the rifle that had been dropped down the shaft,
and Shinji to fire the deadly volley. The plan went well, the extremely weak AT-field was pierced
and the angel was quickly defeated by strandard rifle fire.
