KYOUKO ZEPPLIN SOHRYU
A character rarly shown in the series, Kyouko Zeplin Sohryu was the mother of
Asuka Langley Sohryu (daughter), also a scientist assigned to the German branch of Gehirn (later
NERV), a typical workaholic. She seems to have had very little time for Asuka when she was a child,
always working on a project, thats name or purpose was never mentioned, apart from it having something
to do with the evangelion and the angels. Although she neglected Asuka alot of the time,
she did seem to love Asuka, but had alot of problems expressing her true feeling for Asuka,
which is exactly what led her to turn to her work. Her personality isnt shown or brought
to topic, although she seemed to be a mixture of the personalities of Yui Ikari and
Naoko Akagi.

Her life is a mystery, the events in her life are hardly even mentioned in
the series. She was a scientist working for the German branch of Gehirn,
based in either, Berlin or Hamburg (probably both by the sounds of it).
Her work seemed to be heavily involved, which would make one suspect that
it was work in building the evangelion, which at that time, was still in
progress. However, there was an accident involving Kyouko, in which she
sustained some physical and mental contact with either an evangelion or
an Angel. Much like Yui, she was destroyed, but rather than it resulting
in her death, she survived. Sometime soon after the incident invloving Kyouko,
Asuka was chosen as a pilot for evangelion unit 02.
The series, doesn't really attempt to explore Kyouko, not going into
any real detail about her work or her life. With Maria Kawamura as her
seiyuu, she first appears in episode 22 At least, be humane. Her role seemed
to be another of the mother figures. After her accident, she was left mentally
broken, she was reduced to such a state, that she lived in a world of her own.
Deep down she seemed to love Asuka, showing great comfort for a doll,
whom she though was Asuka. She didn't survive long though, soon comitting
suicide, for what reason no one ever knew. Asuka, then still a child,
was the one to find her mother, hanging from the ceiling, when she was just
about to deliver the news of her selection as a pilot. It seems that even
in her death she comforts her Asuka as the core for evangelion unit two.
