NAOKO AKAGI
Another of the mother figures in the series, Naoko plays a small, but
still important role in the evangelion series. She is the mother of Ritsuko Akagi
(Daughter) and was the head technical scientist for Gehirn. Her death early on in the
time line of the series, meant that her presence, much like Yui's, was limited (although
to a lesser extent). She is the sort of work dedicated person, often neglecting her daughter
Ritsuko to complete her work on the super computer Magi systems at Gehirn. She seems the sort
that would have normally had friends, but is apparently far to absorbed in her work, her closest
person being her daughter with whom she was rather honest and straight to the point.

Her life basically the result of her, absorbant nature. Almost always working
(for days and weeks at a time) she hardly ever had time to herself. She also
had been seperated from the father of Ritsuko for a while, and because she
rarly socialised, felt quite alone and wanting for someone close. It was this
that lead her to grow quite jealous of Yui and her young and powerful husband.
She grew so fond of him in fact, that it was she that set set up Unit-01's
activation to absorb Yui, so she could have Gendou to herself (she later has an affair
with him). Soon hereafter she met the young Rei, and upon Rei uncovering Gendou's true
feelings for her, strangled the infant to death, comitting suicide soon after.
Her character was never developed in the series. With Mika Doi as her seiyuu,
she first appears in episode 21 The birth of NERV. Essentially the same as Yui,
she represents many things, and is important to many, part of the eva story.
Her actions are understandable, giving her situation, and misfortune. She is the
reason that NERV exists as it is, the reason for the Magi, and the reason for
the person Ritsuko became. She was the humanity and souce of betrayal from Gendou,
and even in her death, continues to fight for him as the core for
evangelion unit zero.
