PEN PEN
Without doubt the cutest character in the series, but also the least used. Penpen is
a sea penguin, well almost is. He is one of the new kawaii warm water penguins that is a result
seccond impact on the environment. He has apparently been the pet of Misato Katsuragi for quite a
while, learning to get used to her unusual way of living, long before Shinji turned up.
He seems to possess a rather high intelligence, being able to draw a bath for himself,
get a towel for himself, keep his freezer clean, and eat almost anything that is put in
front of him ( no matter how difficult ). Living in Misato's seccond freezer he spends
his time lazing about in the freezer, bathing, and just generally relaxing.

Being two years old, his place in the series is almost non existant, and is hardly ever
involved. Apart from Misato and Shinji talking about him, him hanging around Asuka, and his
move to Hikari Horaki when Misato decides it is to dangerous for him to live with her. In the
manga,he is a little more important, as he is the result, not of the forces of nature due to
the seccond impact, but a result of an experiment gone wrong. He was due for execution,
that was untill Misato adopted him, saving his life, just before his death.
His role os not of any real significance to the events in the series. With Megumi Hayashibara
as his seiyuu, he first appears in episode 2 Unfamiliar Ceiling. However his place
in the series adds another layer of imterest to the series. He is more than just a pet,
but one of Misato's crutches, with which she can cry ( and she does ). He is the pet
that welcomes home Misato, Shinji and Asuka, no matter how upset with themselves, or
annoyed with each other are. His future after his move to Hikari's was never mentioned.
