PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - ASUKA AND THE 15TH ANGEL ARAEL (basic)
In episode 22, the 15th angel Arael throws a psychic attack at Asuka.
This attack consists of directly contacting her subconscious, which,
according to Freud, is the part of the mind in which is kept all that
causes us annoyance and conflict with morals and social values; desires,
memories, or shameful, sad, sexual, violent thoughts etc. A structure
exists called mechanism of repression, which forms a barrier and disallows
these ideas to pass to the conscious, except when we dream or in some other
reduced cases. Then, this angel's ability was to destroy Asuka's mechanism
of repression, and leave free the content of the subconscious. This caused
an absolute collapse of her mind, and especially of its ego which was overloaded
with guilt and extremely sad memories such as that of her mother's death.
She wished to repress these memories to become stronger, but paradoxically
they left her in the most infantile state, instead of transforming her into
an adult as she wanted. "Kaji-san, it's polluted": Freud points out that
the conscious contact with the repressed mind causes neurosis, which was
what happened to Asuka. This can even be classified as psychosis because
of the loss of contact with reality that was derived later in this case.
There is an important detail here; Asuka could not generate an AT field after
that attack, after losing her mechanism of repression...
