PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - ASUKA-LIBIDO (PULSATIONS OF LIFE) (advanced)
Before the arrival of Asuka, the series has a more serious and low-key feel, but with her
appearance the love-hate relationship between her and Shinji begins. This creates humorous
moments that involve the other characters, "alleviating" the series.
But when their Ego begins to weaken, the series begins to decay until it reaches the bottom
of the sadness and self-destruction. This is manifested in Shinji, who loses his great and
dear friend Kaworu by murdering him, and being shown in a less-than-happy state in the movie
"The End of Evangelion".
In this same movie we see Shinji requesting help from Asuka who is unconscious.
I believe that this is a calling to their force of life, to give him a reason, a stimulus
and energy to leave that state of absolute desolation. Thus, the masturbation scene has
to do with an evocation of the sexual current that deeply marks the Libido. But above all,
the most representative thing in Asuka is her strong desire of LIVING, as it is shown in
"The End of Evangelion" and what causes her to return from death in the end.
But there is something important here: Freud said that the Libido is not reducible. You
can only reduce its sexual nature, and as a consequence it becomes more close to the
ego than to the other people. The Libido then becomes Narcissistic, and this is almost
overlapping the Thanatos pulsation.
