PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - AT FIELD - MECHANISM OF REPRESSION (basic)

It could be that the AT Field represents, in certain form, Asuka's mechanism of repression. She was able to recover the ability to produce it when she was alleviated from the terrible anguish of these painful memories, when she contacted her mother's soul. This acted to restore the repression, and reconcile her daughter's internal conflict.

The fact that the Angels and the Evangelions have an incredibly powerful AT Field is because they are not human, and thus they don't live according to the socio-cultural or moral rules that cause the conflict with the primary desires of the subconscious. Their mechanism of repression is more effective simply because the aggressions of reality don't mean anything for them; they don't contradict their essence. Only an attack from a being of their own kind can pass over their mechanism of repression, since they are the only ones with a similar mental context. A great quantity of energy can have the same effect. This energy could be translated as tension for humans, but for Angels, it is simply their creator's force (Lance of Longinus).

Kaworu says before being murdered by Shinji that they all have an AT Field... "the AT Field is the wall of the soul that everyone has.". If we put the soul in the place of the subconscious, the mechanism of repression also contains it and it protects it simultaneously. As I already said, it protects the soul from the normalities and social restrictions, and it contains it to prevent it from contacting the conscious.
