PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - CHARACTERS (basic)
The Evangelion characters are very interesting from a psychological point of view.
We observe in them some very well characterized dysfunctions of their personality.
Some of them are: ASUKA, who has a narcissist personality, which has among its
features: great fantasies of success without limits, pleas for constant attention,
feeling choleric, embarrassed, or arrogantly indifferent to criticism or failure.
She expects to be considered before others because, in fact, she believes to be better
than them; she feels scorn for the rights of other people and lacks the capacity to
put herself in the place of others.
Rei, on the other hand, has a schizophrenic personality, which implies inability to
establish social relationships. She presents a cold and far away personality,
indifferent to flattery or criticism, and she is not able to demonstrate emotions
appropriately; for this reason, she demonstrates a lack of humour.
Misato avoids lingering and deep relationships, trying to live life in the most
superficial way possible; this is common in people with an avoidance dysfunction
in their personality. Gendou Ikari is a case of compulsive personality that is
demonstrated by perfectionism, insistence in that people can make thing happen,
attachment to work, and very restricted capacity to express emotions and fondness.
Ritsuko also presents certain features of this classification.
Shinji could fit the dependent personality that is defined by a lack of trust in
himself, abandoning his responsibilities, and letting others make important
decisions about his life for him. He is dependent, making his necessities
subordinate to the desire to avoid hurting people close to him or put in danger
the relationships upon which he depends. This reminds me a lot of Asuka reproaching
Shinji because he constantly apologizes for everything.
Even so, I don't think that Shinji totally fits this personality due to his intents
of escaping, and his tantrums toward his father, for example when Gendou activated
the Dummy plug of eva-01 which proceeded to slaughter eva-04, within which was Touji.
These characteristics tell us that Shinji is not the same as Asuka and Rei, who are
personifications of pure dysfunctionality.
