PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - REI, ASUKA, SHINJI: SUPER-EGO, ID, EGO (advanced)
One interpretation that can be made concerning these characters is that Shinji represents
the ego; that is, the visible face of the mind, the personality and the result of the
balance of the other mental forces. Asuka is the Id; desires and instincts without
censorship. In other words, the part of a person that only cares about what he wants,
without concern for the consequences. Finally, Rei takes the place of the super-ego,
the judge for the ego; it censors and imposes social morals beyond its own desires.
In this case the ego is dominated by the super-ego (typical in depressive people).
For this reason, Rei appears in the "visions" of Shinji, asking him things like
"Did you try to understand?". Also she slapped him when he said negative things
about his father.
Asuka simply thinks that Shinji is a repressed idiot, typical of the id and also of Asuka.
