NEON GENESIS
EVANGELION DATABASE

WHAT IS THE REAL STORY BEHIND THE MULTIPLE AND ENDINGS?

This question is without doubt the most heated argument on the topic of Evangelion, probably the most debated issue of all Anime ever created before or since. Almost every fan who has seen the series and/or movies will find no sense of an ultimate clear finality to this series. This question gives rise to so many problems and possibilities have equal value. Fans usually make up thier mind as to what they think, usually based upon thier own feelings and beliefs, all of which have their reasons for believing in what they do and all are of equal value.

To understand the truth to the ending of Evangelion, you must first understand what Evangelion is and why its creator Anno Hideaki created it in the first place. To explain simply Anno had been in a deep and lengthy depression, experiencing what many people experience at one time or another. When he emerged from his depression, he created the concept of Evangelion from his experiences. The idea began to develop, quickly being recognised as a brilliant concept for anime. Gainax soon began project E, producing it in secret, gaining many rumors. The releace of the series in Japan was met mith massive popularity. this endured until it met financial difficulties, showing a little in the last two episodes as it was finished quickly. Gainax was flooded with requests to finish the series properly, eventually doing so with the intended ending.

The main argument of the ending is what happened, in which thier are three possibilities, first the angels win and humanity is destroyed, two humanity wins and doesnt not initiate third impact, and three humanity wins and initiates third impact (shinji accepting or rejecting third impact). The first possility in not possible as the angels was clearly defeated. The seccond is ending NERV would have preferred, but which did not come to pass. Thie third is where the argument takes place, clearly third impact or "human instrumentality" was initiated in both the series and the movie. Gainax officially releaced that the series ending and movie ending was unrelated, from which the viewer could choose what they preferred.Fans are given a choice of three possibilities, the series ending, the movie ending or a mix of both.

In the series ending Shinji finally learns to accept himself, which in that context suggests his accepted third impact, but this takes place in his mind, not showing anything that happens to the world (the reasons fans disliked it). In the movie ending, the world is subject to the trauma of third impact, Shinji being given the sole choice to humanities future, rejecting it and returning to normal, Asuka following him soon after. Manys fans choose the movie ending, beliving in an "Adam and Eve" idea that Shinji and Asuka are the only ones left, ignoring the series ending entirely, which is totally valid and accepted widely. However some fans choose to believe that the series ending and the movie took place at the same time, the series in Shinji's head, the movie in reality, Shinji searching his soul, learning to finally accept himself (the series ending) and rejecting it in reality (the movie ending).

In the end, it totally up to the individual to choose what he is she believes is the best ending for them, which should not be taken from them or held against them. Ultimately it makes no difference to yourself what others think took place, but friendly constructive debating the issue can only make people more sure of what they think is correct. Some will always hold that one is more correct then the other, but remember that even though this series digs deep with everyones emotions, and may mean alot to you, that it is still an anime series intended to help so many lost people finally come to grips with who they are, and when someone finally does, it is very wrong of someone to take that from them with thier own selfish pride.
