NEON GENESIS
EVANGELION DATABASE

WHAT IS THE FIRST, SECCOND AND THIRD IMPACTS?

These question is a simple question of confusion on the most past. While addressed so often in the series, as to exactly what they are, and their individual significance in their context, is something everyone seems to have an opinion aobut. For instance, everyone seems to be familiar with what seccond impact is about, and may know what third impact is about roughly, many seem to fail to fully appreciate or understand any of the impact events in Neon Genesis Evangelion.

First impact is the best example fo this confusion. While never directly referred to in the series, it obviously did occour, otherwise seccond impact would have been first impact. Many people have thier opinions about this topic, which at the moment has two competing theories. One is that first impact, was the meteorite that impacted south america, killing a large percentage of the large animals on earth and wiped out the dinosaurs, setting the scene for humans and hence giving rise to race of man. While being the more accepted theroy, in context of Evangelion, it seems to lack the full biblical majesty which is so prominent throughout the series. This is where the seccond theroy comes in, that which first impact was the creation, in which the earth was impacted by an enormous object, instantly liquifying the surface giving birth to the moon. This theroy suggests that first impact was the creation of everything, the earth, the moon, the skies, oceans, and then..... life.

Seccond impact is the one everyone is so familiar with. Publically, it was a meteorite impact on Antarctica, which was what was written in the text books. However, it was actually first contact with a entity not of this earth, the first angel, adam. The Katsuragi expedition to antarctica was for this exact purpose, to study this entity. What exactly was done is not known, but it is aparent that an accident occoured. The entity grew to full maturity in secconds, breaching its containment and making its way to the surface. It spread its wings, but then in a flash all its energy was releaced as it was reduced to an embroy once more. The energy releaced vapourised the facility and blew the entire continent to pieces, flooding the world, killing half the earthly species and half of humanity in a few hours. No one survived the expedition except one Misato Katsuragi, the daughter of the expedition's leader, saved by her terminal father with his last dying strength. Seccond impact represents the beginning of the trial of humanity, a precursor to the prophesised end of days.

Third impact is the end of everything, the completion, or total decimation of humanity. Whether successful or unsuccessful, humanity will be reshaped like never before. This is what is referred to as "human instrumentality", essentially combining everyone into a single "perfect" entity, ourselves filling the "empty" holes in others, ending the barriers that make us individuals, ending all pain for evermore. This of course may not happen if it rejected by a single individual, there cannot be an exception, if this is so, the perfect being is shattered, and the individuals begin to refrom from the pieces like new once more. Full of mystery and intrigue, third impact is the peak of a philosophical solution to the problem or "sin" built into humanity. However, even though you are totally without pain, without any shape or form, without your individualism, lost in a web of your mind and others, there is not point in existance. Rei explains to Shinji that is the nature of being in such a state, which is the reason that third impact fails.
