WHO KILLED KAJI?
This question is one of the more heated arguments in all of Evangelion. Surprising, seeing as though
it doesnt really change anything no matter who it is. Although it does make sense, mainly because it
was never mentioned in the seires, and with all the buildup and motives from a number of people and
organisations, not having a clear killer, is like a detective novel without the ending. The debate
has its line up of suspects, who all could have had sufficient reason to take the life of Kaji Ryouji.
Your stance on this question already sets up a bias, and as such I will meerly present the facts here,
and as in a court of law, i will present what i believe to be most likely, but will let you decide for
yourself who really did kill Kaji.
The line of of suspects are as follows. Major Misato Katsuragi, his life long desire, and soul mate,
she has always been close to Kaji since knowing him at Univeristy. She has also has had extended
experience working with him as the tactical officer for NERV. Her position, could put her in the line
of fire from her commanding officers, for her convinient close proximity to Kaji. The executive
officers of NERV, C.E.O Gendou Ikari, and his Advisor Dr. Kouzou Fuyutsuki, both know Kaji well
through their extended experieces with him in the various branches of NERV. Kaji, being both their
agent, a government double agent, and both Gendou and Dr. Fuyutsuki having such lofty positions, either
or both could easily order his execution for any number of good reasons. Ritsuko Akagi, the Systems
Administrator and head of the Technology department at NERV. She has known Kaji equally as long as
Misato, since her days at University (actually the three were inseperable at university). Ritsuko's
high position, her questionable relationship with Gendou Ikari, and her secretive jealousy of
Misato are all good reasons for her to have wanting Kaji dead. Last of all, is the many various
personell and agents of NERV and SEELE. These people who are under the orders of Gendou Ikari,
Dr. Kouzou Fuyutsuki, and C.E.O of SEELE (and board member number one of NERV) Keel Lorentz.
The facts before Kaji's death are as follows. The most important fact is that Kaji was familir
with his killer, smiling when he remarked "your late", he had been waiting, for someone, for some
reason, connected with the secrets of NERV. Misato had be detained by NERV personell, her gun
revoked untill Kaji had been dealt with. Her gun would be returned after this, and she woudl be
releaced, which puts Misato out of the picture. Furthur more Misato's conduct doesnt match after
this, of heart broken sorrow, knowing that "dealt with", meant his execution, weeping at his last
message to her. She also continued his work, hardly the conduct of of a killer for thier victim.
Gendou Ikari, had long suspected alterior motives to Kaji, suspecting hims of the power sabotage
during angel 9, also knowing that Kaji knew that the "Marduk Institute" was a fabrication that Gendou
himself had created. However Gendou also knew that he was a government double agent, digging very deep
into the depths of NERV, getting closer to the real ugly truth and story behind everything.
Dr. Fuyutsuki is much the same, also that his recent releace by Kaji from his own detainment
(instigated by SEELE for NERV's deviance, seen in the directors cut) seems all too convinient.
Keel Lorentz also has a similar situation, although Kaji is alot less significant, and Keel has
alot less familiarity with Kaji then all the others.
As such, it would stand to be most logical, that the execution of Kaji, took place in somewhere out of
the way, most likely by an unseen agent, under the orders of one or both of the executive
officers for NERV. This is due to the nature of his edgy relationship with the executive officers
at NERV and his known adverse conduct. There is a line in the red cross book that supports this
aswell, which is as follows, "Because of his own curiosity, he made enemies and was consequently
killed by gunfire. He left the product of all his investigation to Misato."
