PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS - KAORU (NARCISSIST LIBIDO) (advanced)
The Narcissist Libido is the ego's love taken to its maximum expression. Kaworu defines himself
as love in "The End of Evangelion" and it is certain, when Asuka withdraws he appears as a
substitute, befriending Shinji; he also appears when she dies in "The End of Evangelion. I
said that Libido isn't reducible, so if Asuka is not there, there should be something to
take her place. It is the Narcissist Libido that is totally dedicated to the ego (Shinji),
of almost-suppressed sexual connotation. Kaworu is the Libido that loves the ego, he loves
Shinji (he even tells it to him), and even sacrifices himself for Shinji's conservation.
Freud doubted if he should put the pulsations of the ego among the Libido pulsations, since
they are bordering on the pulsations of death (Thanatos); this explains the enormous
resemblance between Rei and Kaworu. Kaworu is the love of one's own self, indispensable for
harmony with other people, because if one doesn't love oneself it is impossible to love others.
