Following the devestation of the pacific and european wars during world war 2, the world saw
what damage it could inflict upon itself. Indeed the seccond world war mirrored the first,
although in a much more destructive light. Considering the torment of the depression that
followed the first world war, the world had to find a floor on which world nations could
collectively decide on global political and economic policies. Two organisations was set up,
the first was GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs) which later became the WTO (World
Trade Organisation, it would decide on global econimic policy to avoid another depression,
rebuild and improve upon a fractured global economy. The secccond organisation was the UN
(United Nations), this would become a body to which every world nation would belong, where
decisions regarding world politics could be decided, rather then relying on private meeting by
various nations governments.
Since the days of its creation it has been responsible for creating the long peace enjoyed today.
Although wars do continue, they are no where near the scale of that seen in the 1940's. The United
Nations have been armed with a joint global military force from every country in its membership,
which is used to settle disputes, when agreed on by its members, with force if nessesary. The
United Nations have been consulted upon for many disputes between neighbouring countries and
for the destruction of chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons in various countries also
more recently with the abolishment of world terrorism.
In the series of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the United Nations are responsible for the defense of
Japan under the extreme circumstance of seccond impact and the appearance of the angels under
direction from the United Nations, which is implied to be under direction from SEELE. The United
Nations appeared in great force when the third angel appeared to attack Neo-Tokyo 3, hammering the
target with everything that it had, scoring hit after hit. However the presence of the AT-field
proved much stronger then first anticipated by its commanders, rendering all of its weapons
useless against the angels. Following this, the target was bombed with an N2 mine, an extremely
powerful nuclear based weapon which proved to only be minimally effective, only managing to disable
target for a few hours. In the end the United Nations forces, along with JSSDF forces, were used to
storm the NERV facility at Neo-Tokyo 3, in an attempt to retake it from the deviant NERV commander,
ultimatly failing to avert third impact.
